Passage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. Many people have come up with ideas to ease some of the problems associated with population growth. For example, paper manufacturing companies in the United States do business with the logging(伐木) industry, which cuts down the trees needed to make paper. In recent years, most paper companies have realized that the cutting down of trees Can do a great deal of harm to the environment. Therefore, these paper companies now provide money for programs for planting new trees to replace those that have been cut down.Similarly, most communities in the United States have a recycling program. These programs recycle newspapers, glass bottles, and tin Cans. The recycling of newspapers means that new paper can be made from old paper instead of from fresh wood. Many city and other local govemments in the United States make certain that at least some of the paper they purchase comes from recycling, rather than from cutting fresh timber. In some parts of the United States, few businesses have been moving to small cities instead of large ones. This idea cuts down on problems such as overcrowding that are caused by the numbers of people in the largest cities.Developing smaller cities-called "micropolitan" areas--have certain advantages. Because these cities are closer to rural areas. They can help sustain and even revive rural economies through small-scale industries, including the processing and marketing of agricultural products. In addition, the governments of micropolitan areas can respond more quickly and effectively to the needs of their residents, especially the poor.It is easy to become discouraged by the environmental damage and other problems that rapid population growth causes. Some of that damage cannot be completely undone. Many scientists, however, are confident that by carrying out ideas such as these, in addition to better conserving the resources we have not yet used, we can reduce the negative impact on our lives.

Passage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.Professors have lectured for centuries. But how effective is lecturing to students compared with working with them?A new study compared two classes of a beginning physics course at the University of British Columbia. There were more than 260 students in each class. Both were taught by popular and experienced professors. The study took place for one week near the end of the vear. One class continued to be taught in the traditional lecture style. The other professor was replaced by two teachers. They had little teaching experience but received training in interactive teaching methods. The training was led by Carl Wieman, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist who led a science education program. There was almost no lecturing. The teachers put the students in small groups to discuss and answer questions. They gave them readings and quizzes to finish before class so they would come prepared to discuss the material.Professor Wieman says that before the experiment with these and other activities, test scores for both classes were the same. Afterward, both classes took the same test. Students in the interactive class scored nearly twice as high as those in the traditional class. Attendance also increased that week. One of the teachers says the methods they used are designed to encourage students to think like scientists. The study seems to prove earlier findings about lecturing to large classes. But some experts have criticized the way the study was done. Both of the researchers who taught the class, Ms. Schelew and Louis Deslaurier, were also authors of the study. This could raise questions about whether their involvement might have influenced the results.Professor Wieman says that research has shown better ways to teach based on evidence about how the brain learns. And he hopes more professors will learn that how someone teaches may be more important than who does the teaching.

26.The purpose ofthe experiment is to find out________.

◆21Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. It was one of the hottest days, of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month and our crops were dying. If we didn't see some rain soon, we would lose everything. It was on this day that I witnessed the only miracle I have seen with my own eyes.I was in the kitchen when I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking toward the woods, obviously trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house. I thought that whatever he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however, he was once again walking toward the woods. Finally I crept out of the house and followed Billy on his journey, making sure not to be seen. He was cupping both hands in front of him, careful not to spill the water he held in them. Branches and thorns slapped his little face as he went into the woods, but he did not try to avoid them. He approached several dangerous-looking large deer and knelt down beside a tiny fawn(幼鹿), obviously suffering from loss of water. The fawn lifted its head with great effort to drink the water in my boy’s hands. When the water was gone, he jumped up to run back to the house. He went up to a spigot (水龙头) we had shut off the water, to opened it all the way up and a small trickle(细流) began to flow out. He knelt there, letting the water slowly fin up his makeshift “cup.” When he stood up and saw me in front of him, his little eyes filled with tears. “I'm not wasting,” he pleaded. I patted him on the back and joined him with a small pot of water from the kitchen. I stayed away on the edge of the woods as he worked hard to save the fawn in the woods. Tears rolled down my face and hit the ground when they were suddenly joined by other drops, and more drops, and more. I looked up at the sky and found it was raining.
